Once a year in June, amateur radio operators across the United
States set up stations in remote or not-so-remote areas operating on
battery or emergency generator power, and make as many radio
contacts as they can in 24 hours. My local radio club set up in the
Santa Cruz Mountains.
Field Day is many things - an introduction of amateur radio to the
public, a contest, a chance for operators to gain experience with
bands they haven't on operated before. It's also a chance to
practice emergency operating skills that have been all too necessary
in the recent California wildfires.
Many times, CW, Morse code, will get through when voice modes are
unusable because of distance or interference:

Nice shots... Mark. I particularly liked the overhead angle one...
it's an angle I would not have thought of!
However, your report contained only one error of fact. The field day
covers all operators/clubs in North America, not just the USA.
Here, in Logan Lake, our local Thompson Radio Society (VE7TRS) set up
"camp" in the Ranch & Country Club clubhouse, and went to work.
One of the keys in use was so beautifully made, I thought it
qualified as a "work of art".

Here it is, in use... during the field day.

You'll note the bank of batteries, on the floor, as Paul was
operating QRP (very low power), without the use of AC.
Locally, our club provides all communications for the local
(and, sadly, very active) Search & Rescue Society, as well as
assisting with local forest fire fighting activities.
Cheers!
