Coots eat only the best shellfish

Waking up too early is good for something. I couldn't go back to
sleep this morning, so I drove to Shoreline Park to check out the
winter ducks. California's hunting season runs from mid-October to
January, and many ducks and coots shelter in preserves and parks
where they won't get shot at.
American coots lack webbed feet. They're probably more closely
related to chickens than ducks, but that doesn't keep them out of the
water, diving for clams and mollusks:
