Re: Competition AN EXPLANATION. :-)

Hi Tina,
Once again the way one says something on the screen doesn't always commute
to the ..... "kidding aspect of what one says" ................. As in my
comment to Nathan..

>>>> >Hell man we've got enough competition already and it's getting worse,
so
> >please keep your day job, live a long and happy life doing what you're
doing
> >now! Thank you. :-)<<<<<<<<

It was not to seriously dissuade him from going PRO, but meant as a joke as
I imagined everyone would understand. Oh well! :-(

Throughout my career as a photojournalist and lecturer I've always advocated
that in choosing what a person wishes to do for the rest of their life as a
job, profession whatever, they should absolutely follow their heart and they
will succeed! Maybe not in a few years but if they do what they love and
have great feelings for they will succeed!

I had an attraction to camera's from my father's early days of family happy
snaps whenever we were dressed in our Sunday go to church clothes.

So for many years as a youth I always wanted a camera but could never afford
one. Eventually as many of you know, my wife Irene gave me a little 35mm
Argus A2 for my first birthday in 1950 after we were married. So she in
effect unleashed me on the world into a career of heart and passion not yet
diminishing 55 years later. All because I followed what was in my heart and
not what I'd been educated to do.

This has led to an incredible life in photography that many would kill for
nor would they've imagine it were possible 55 years ago when the magical
world was opened for me.......... just because that was what I wanted to do,
"Be a news photographer!"

When one considers how many millions of people get up each morning and go to
"work and hate almost every minute of it," it's just the opposite for me.
Most days I can't wait for the next day to arrive doing something in
photography whatever it maybe. Obviously shooting an assignment or on a
project of some kind is always first choice.

So let me try my comment to Nathan once again: ;-)

"Nathan mon ami, when the day comes and you feel you can be a fulltime pro
economically surviving in this world because in your heart that's what you
want to be, go for it. Enjoy your passion for photography to it's fullest
extent and we as professionals will welcome you. Why? Quite simply to give
us a good kick in the ass to stay on our toes because , "Hey there's a new
guy an the block, so move it!!" :-)

Now folks I hope this produces the right message about Nathan and my
comment.. ;-) Thank you.

As far as encouraging young people today? If you see the magical talent that
sorts one out from all the rest, encourage them to go for it even with
changing times. Those with the brains, talent and ability will survive,
those that are a flash in the pan will fall by the wayside no differently
than any other profession or trade.

However, I warn them, if an old guy taps them on the shoulder for a little
shooting space they better give it, as I can be one mean puppy in a crowd
with a monopod! ;-)

I'm kidding folks. :-) The above is a joke........ a smart ass comment.
Why? Because I'm always first there to shoot and last to leave, so they'd be
looking for space, not me. ;-) And I'd give them room for a 400mm over my
shoulder. ;-)

There you go eh! ;-)

ted
