Re: Competition

Your discussion about careers and competition struck a nerve.

I couldn't figure out why I had so much trouble sleeping the last 5 years I spent in the semiconductor industry. (I spent 25 years working in it all told.) After leaving it 17 months ago my cash flow is much less but I sleep much better (when I'm not worrying about being equity-rich and cash-poor).

I got BSEE and MSEE degrees because I wanted to design analog circuits and the pay was good (and there were available jobs). And I spent a significant amount of my early working career playing in smoky clubs and rehearsing in rock bands after hours with the naive hope of eventually escaping.

On balance I probably would have been better off following my bliss at the start and I agree with Nathan that I'd advise folks just starting their working careers to do what they love.

Hi Tina,

No, you should advise young people to pursue what they love. I really
believe that it is better for to choose the path one burns for rather
than choosing something just because it pays better. This is a relevant
issue for me, with a son about to turn 15 and starting, just starting,
to think of where he will go to college and what he should study.

Back when I was making that choice, I decided to study economics because
it was the social science that interested me the most, and I thought
very little about post-university employment. As it turned out, my PhD
is utterly useless as I have worked in business my whole career so far
and could just as well have left university after getting a BA, but I
still do not regret choosing as I did.
