Hi Tina,
No, you should advise young people to pursue what they love. I really
believe that it is better for to choose the path one burns for rather
than choosing something just because it pays better. This is a relevant
issue for me, with a son about to turn 15 and starting, just starting,
to think of where he will go to college and what he should study.
Back when I was making that choice, I decided to study economics because
it was the social science that interested me the most, and I thought
very little about post-university employment. As it turned out, my PhD
is utterly useless as I have worked in business my whole career so far
and could just as well have left university after getting a BA, but I
still do not regret choosing as I did.
