I'm wondering, Ted. I've been giving talks to photography students and
answering their e-mails with advice since I first got started in
photography 30 years ago. I've always encouraged them and said that
photography is a wonderful career. I'm getting a lot more requests for
talks and advice and it occurs to me that I'm only contributing to the
problem! There are many more budding photographers out there than there
are jobs for photographers and the jobs are getting more scarce all the
time! There are no documentary photography magazines left. The stock
photo business is all going the way of royalty-free with magazines wanting
all rights forever for almost no pay. Newspapers are giving digital
cameras to reporters and saying "Bring back some photos that are good
enough."
Maybe I should tell all of these potential photographers that it is the
worst possible job for the worst possible pay and encourage them to become
teachers or sewer workers instead!!
Leically?
