Not bad at all-- I especially liked the third shot in the top row! I assume he was using the nice arena's lights, plus, maybe some fill flash, anyhow it;s a spectacular shot!<<<<

G'day Michael,
Despite spectators using flash that's effective about 20 feet in front of the camera , the pros are not allowed to use flash by international competition rules. Sure the odd time you'll see a rookie pop one, but that's about once, as they're quickly informed they can not use flash because it will "blind the athlete!" Yes we "clever photographer's" know that isn't true unless you pop one right in their face.

This ruling applies to Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games as well as others that come under international Games rules jurisdiction. The rule applies indoors..."and out doors, yes even on sunny days.";-)

But since the murder of the 11 Israeli athletes in Munich 1972 photgraphers coverng international sports are pushed back farther and farther by security rules where a "fill flash" wouldn't make a twinkle on the athlete.

The rule goes back to when photographers used big flash bulbs compared to the small strobes of today. The rule is still on the books.

However another reason for no flash during events is for athletes who are deaf and can't hear the gun to start the race. These days as the starter fires the pistol it also triggers a strobe flash and the deaf athletes re-act to the flash rather than the sound of the gun. Obviously an important factor for no flash.

Most of the pros shooting skating are working with 300mm-400mm and longer glass and work only with the lighting of the arena during competition as you say.

Scott shot one session from a surface side position at the end of the rink, then moved higher to keep the skater clean from the distracting advertising background.

Thanks for commenting as he's a son to be proud of not only in his sport photography, but as a photojournalist as well. Anyone wishing to see more please have a look at his main site then click on various locations at: http://www.sixsixsix.ca/ You may well be surprised. :-)
