Ano Neuvo - Surfers, seals and pelicans

Ano Nuevo State Reserve is known for elephant seals and offshore whales. It's so well-known you have to reserve tickets for elephant seal tours months in advance. Wildlife Photographers of Silicon Valley booked tours for members who wanted to go last September.

The tour actually took place last Sunday.

WPSV had each photographer buy two tickets, one for themselves and one for their tripod. That way, there was room for all of us to set up and not get in each other's way.

A naturalist guided the tour and kept us the required 25 feet or more away from the animals. This is a good idea, since two-ton bulls can shimmy across the sand faster than you can run, and they don't stop for anything.

After the tour, I went down to nearby Cove Beach. I got some closeups of elephant seal bulls, plus some pictures of surfers. I also photographed a California brown pelican in breeding plumage, wandering the beach by himself. Guess no one told him everyone else was in southern California and Baja for the winter!

Afterwards, some of us went to Davenport's Whale City Bakery for early
dinner and beer:
