Jeff:
My love affair with northern New Mexico came from Ansel Adams'
autobiography. I took a kamikaze 3-day vacation to Taos for my birthday
weekend in April 1991, staying with Sue Smoot at La Posada de Taos.
Photographed in town and the Pueblo the first day, then discovered Taos
Ski Valley and skied (badly but enjoyably) the last two days. Ended at
ABQ airport with very chapped lips and windburned face, flew home to
Silicon Valley and vowed to return.
Spent Christmas exploring Anasazi ruins, art and skiing in Santa Fe,
Taos, or Farmington, culture at Sky City, San Ildefonso and Santa Clara,
more ruins and sandstone at Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Bisti Badlands
and Canyon de Chelly for the next 5 years. Even stayed in the Ronald
Reagan room in Grants' El Rancho hotel. Trips to Bosque del Apache for
bird photography came later. Still haven't seen Arecibo. I love that state!
Michael Murphy was advertised at Ogilvie's (I think) on Taos Plaza the
first year I went.
Thanks for looking - it's nice to discover someone else who loves NM.
Your kids should enjoy it!

Mark,
You're making me miss my old vacation spots! When I was young and
single I spent every extra available second - summer, spring, fall or
winter - in northern NM or southern Colorado. From Albuquerque up to
Cuchara (and over by Monument Lake) - either in the national forests
camping, or hanging out in the galleries and micro breweries talking
God and photography with like-minded peers. Had some pictures in The
Variant Gallery in Taos at the time - don't know if it's still around
or not. Back then Michael Murphy played Taos regularly when he wasn't
touring somewhere else and we used to just chill out and enjoy the
experience. Good times and good memories.
I've talked for some time about taking the kids there. After your
last shots, we may have to go next fall. Lovely images!

Subject: Albuquerque - Indian culture
Albuquerque has an ancient gem west of town - Petroglyph National
Monument on Unser Boulevard. Even if you only have a couple hours,
you can see many of its more than 40,000 glyphs.
A rocky hillside has more than enough drawing space:

Closer to town, the Pueblo Indian Cultural Center shows black on
black pottery from Maria Martinez and her family, and other Pueblo
art. It also has an excellent restaurant, and attractive
architectural curves:
