Re: Afternoon in Santa Cruz County

Bob:
I didn't see as much image noise in the web files as you're describing, and the image files from the camera certainly had less. A couple notes:

The detail in these images made for large file sizes, even at Photoshop's '7' setting for JPEG compression. So I didn't go to 9 or higher as I would have liked for best detail and lowest noise.

In the Santa Cruz beach image, I'd hoped the viewer would pay more attention to the silhouettes and colors in the sky and sand. It sounds like I should have let the cliffs and foreground go completely black.

The nice yellow image was shot at ISO 800, so the file has noise to begin with. I used DFine noise reduction on all images, but the tradeoff is always noise versus detail. DFine sometimes 'smooths' fine detail when it reduces noise. I used a very low level of reduction on nice yellow.

Thanks for your comments.

Mark,

Good for you for getting out to the Coast; I find it wonderful at all times of year.

Your images appear to have quite a bit of noise in them, even for web-based jpgs. This is especially visable in your "beach sunset"; the even the grays of the cliffs are very noisy. Same is true for the rocks in "in the water" and even the lighter bark in the background on the right of "nice yellows". Perhaps posting at a slightly lower compression/higher resolution would help. I think these images would benefit with less noise.

Thanks for continuing to share your images,
Bob
