RE: A Brief History - Revisited.

It was my great pleasure actually to have taken Newhall's survey of the
history of photography lecture course at the University of New Mexico in
the early 1970s, where he continued to teach after his retirement. I
still vividly recall his rapping his pointer on the lectern and
instructing the projectionist to "Sharpen the lantern, please."

Cheers

David:
I've always referred to Beaumont Newhall's "The History of Photography"
when I was curious about a photographic event or person. It covers the
time
from 1839 to 1982 (the copyright date of the revision I have). Newhall
was
director of the photography department of New York's Museum of Modern
Art
and a friend of Ansel Adam's (among many other things).
