I've always referred to Beaumont Newhall's "The History of Photography" when I was curious about a photographic event or person. It covers the time from 1839 to 1982 (the copyright date of the revision I have). Newhall was director of the photography department of New York's Museum of Modern Art and a friend of Ansel Adam's (among many other things).
