Thanks everybody. Certainly it’s pretty sure this is a raptor. With suggestions
of falcon, accipiter, bueto. The pose is unusual for a field ID, that’s why I
chose it.
Prairie Falcon: The pic shows a distinctly wide wing (especially the
secondaries) with a rounded tip. Any falcon wing would appear much narrower and
pointed at tip. Many falcons show tail barring but this one is quite wide even
for a fanned pose. Also this tail does not look long in relation to body length
and the overall body shape is “plump” rather than “svelte”. So all that rules
out Prairie Falcon and other falcons. More when I get back.

I think the frequency of the barring in the tail is too great for a Coopers
or Sharpie. The eye too light for a Prairie Falcon. The frequent barring
combined with the light eye, the dark wing tips, and mottled back leads me to
think Red-shouldered juvenile (even though we are a little out of range) or
Red-tailed juvenile. The tail looks long, but tails are longer in juveniles
than adults in Red-tailed Hawks (not sure if that is the case for
Red-shouldered). The eye may be too light even for a juvenile red-shouldered,
but I like this guess. The bird looks thin, but since it is in an awkward
pose, size is difficult. The stark brown and white barring bothers me a
little for red-tailed, but they exhibit a lot of variation and it is our most
common hawk. All that being said, I don't have a field guide with me right
now, so my guesses may be way off :)

Here is a fun ID exercise. Scurry County about 3 weeks ago. I’ll post
details and another view
after some responses. The rust is just a lighting artifact. Entire bird is
only brown n white.
