Greetings All:
With just a couple of weeks to go until the first count and all sorts of
interesting birds starting to pile up in the region (Vermilion Flycatcher,
all three bluebirds) I am starting to get pretty excited about the upcoming
CBCs ... and still working hard to come up with enough counters. These
counts are a lot of fun, they are of considerable scientific value (the
largest citizen science project that I know of), and they give birders, at
all skill levels, a chance to burnish their skills.
The Lubbock County CBC will be held on Saturday, 17 December 2016.
Counters meet with their team leaders at 7:30 AM, bird until 4:30 or so,and
then meet back at my place for a potluck dinner and countdown I would like
to have at least 21 counters, 7 of whom must be willing to be area leaders
... and still need nine counters:
Area 1 - Ransom Lake and eastern farmlands - Peter Keyel
Area 2 - V8 Ranch and Buffalo Springs Lake - Justin Bosler
Area 3 - Lubbock City Farms and environs - Anthony Hewetson
Area 4 - Northwest quadrant - Rob Lee
Area 5 - Canyon Lakes - Phillip Kite, Ellen Hildebrandt, Liam McGuire
Area 6 - Lubbock West - William Wenthe, Leanna Smith
Area 7 - Lubbock East - Skyler Parks, Kathryn Brautigam, Angelina Zappia
The Muleshoe NWR CBC will be held on Sunday, 18 December 2016. Counters
meet at the refuge residence at 7:30 AM, bird for a half day (this is an
area restricted count - the refuge only) and then meet back at the
residence for a potluck lunch and countdown. I would like to have at least
12 counters, 4 of whom must be willing to be area leaders ... and could
still use four counters.
Area 1 - Paul's Lakes and environs - Anthony Hewetson
Area 2 - White Lakes and environs - Phillip Kite, Kathryn Brautigam, Ellen
Hildebrandt
Area 3 - Goose Lakes and environs - Justin Bosler, Peter Keyel
Area 4 - Atop the rim - Jim Crites, Rob Lee
The White River Lake CBC will be held on Saturday, 31 December 2016. We
meet at the White River Lake Marina at 7:30 AM, count until 4:30 or so, and
then meet up at the Marina for a hot dinner and the countdown. I would
like to have at least 15 counters, 5 of whom must be willing to be area
leaders ... and still need seven counters.
Area 1 - East and Southeast - Anthony Hewetson
Area 2 - East side of the Lake - Jim Crites, Rob Lee
Area 3 - West side of the Lake - Phillip Kite, Ellen Hildebrandt
Area 4 - Great North Woodlands - Drew Harvey
Area 5 - West and Southwest - Katheryn Watson, Jackie Driscoll
If you are interested in participating in one (or more) of these counts,
please let me know as soon as is possible. We have had a reasonably wet
and mild year, are already seeing good numbers of some irruptives and are
anticipating some real goodies this winter.
