[laffs] The next fly-in

Hi guys,

I was burning the rags (thinking) about our past fly-ins. The first one was
really thrown together very quickly and did not have much of a theme. The
second leaned toward war birds. I was trying to come up with an idea for
the next fly-in and thought that kit bashing a Sig Something Extra (or
another kit) as a club would be fun and invite other clubs to do the same.
Then have awards for best looking, flying, and etc. Then I thought that
doing a kit bash would be too specific and would leave a lot of guys out of
the build. So I thought that perhaps a contest to build and fly a plane
that is built completely from stuff you would buy from Home Depot or Lowe's
would involve more folks. All the materials must be off the shelf, no
special order items, and of course the engine would have to be a converted
leaf blower, chainsaw or string trimmer that can be found locally as well.
The engines could be any where from 19 to 45 cc. The theme could be
something like, "Teach a String Trimmer to Fly." Then give your awards for
best flying, original, looking, and so on. We could get together every
couple of weeks (after the meeting and another evening or whatever) for a
few hours and work out our design and build until it was ready. It would be
easy enough to build a 10' ugly stick, a SPAD, gutter pipe type of plane, or
cut the parts to build a scale type of plane. Maybe the wives would want to
get together and do something on those evenings, who knows? At the end of
the event the plane could be auctioned off to recapture some of the funds or
we could take it to other fly-ins to advertise our club. There are a lot of
options here, flying dog houses, shower stalls, doors, toilet seats, you get
the idea.

I know that it is getting close to time that we register a date for our
fly-in and it would be nice to include in our AMA ad the theme that we will
use. I think something like this would be great fun to see just what we can
come up with. By the way, the string trimmer or what ever can be a used
one, which would be even better!

Kick it around a bit and I will talk to guys later.
Ed P.
