[kismac] Passive vs Active scanning

Under what conditions can Kismac be doing active scanning? Is this possible
only with airport cards? Is it possible with a third party Prism II
card,sourceforge wireless driver, and MacJack driver? How does one ensure
that passive scanning is being used?
