Is there any possibility that it can become mixed up as to which the original driver is? Or can it be trusted to always put the sourceforge driver back if user selects original driver and the special driver if that is selected?

I had a strange situation where I thought that might have happened when I tried to use kismac after installing it and I used the driver tool unnecessarily by mistake, and I got in a situation where I could not use my card normally and I reinstalled both the Source Forge driver and kismac to fix it.

If you don't know, leave it alone ;o). It is only for some rare
conditions, when you want think reloading the driver will help. It is
basically a left over of ancient times ;o)

No it is by purpose not smart. It will do whatever you tell it to do...
