Thanks, Chris, for that pointer. The USB-only Delorme Tripmate isn't
going to be easy to bridge over, since they have chosen a chipset for
which there are no mac/linux drivers to simulate a serial device.
A couple of the other usb-only gps units DO use chipsets that have
drivers (wish I had researched this in more detail...), so I doubt if
it is impossible to do, they just don't have the inclination or
resources, I guess.
The Mac OS X "sees" the delorme as a USB device, and I wondered if
someone knew about writing USB drivers were to poke at it they could
extract the gps information in it's "native" mode rather than as a
pseudo-serial device. But that is WAY outside my expertise.
If anyone thinks they can do this... let's talk -- I have a tripmate
they can borrow to test!
