I had looked at various directional and gain antennas but soon realized
that at 2.4GHz the coax and connector losses are going to eat up most
of the gains unless you keep the coax real short. (is 18" going to
provide enough movement for how you intend to use the antenna?)
Instead, I choose a USB WiFi adaptor that can be mounted directly at
the feed point of whatever antenna I decide to build. I may want to
find something with more power if I decide to do more than just
scanning.
