[Kindersite Newsletter] Re: autism spectrum disorder/ inclusion

In the area of Iowa in which I work (and probably across the state), there are Early Childhood Special Education classrooms. These classrooms have various programming within them - half-day, full-day, or times that have reverse integration in which typical preschoolers from the community come to the ECSE classroom for their preschool experience. These programs are set-up for all types of disabilities including autism. The school district "purchases" slots in the community preschools which are filled by disabled preschoolers whose goals are monitored by early childhood special educators and/or speech-language pathologists. The goal for our disabled preschoolers is to provide a variety of programming that can be "wrapped" around them to best serve their needs.

I was wondering how many 'out there' have programs designed to include children with autism within their pre-school/kindergarten programs. I work in a public school and we have a program for our children with autism which utilizes ABA techniques within the full day with the student attending the preschool program and receiving one on one specialized programs the other half of the day. I would be interested how others address this particular special need.
