Beverly, I teach E.C. Special ed in the morning and 4 year old kindergarten in the afternoon. Depending on the age of the child and severity of his/her disability we will determine where the best placement would be. 3-4 years old the child would be in a self contained E.C. room. 4 by September 1st the child would be placed in a "Normal 4 year old kindergarten program with or without an aide depending on abilities. Then the child moves to 5 year old kindergarten if we feel he/she is ready. I currently have one child in 4 year old kindergarten that was diagnosed autism spectrum disorder and is functioning okay in my room. Many prompts needed, visual schedule, sensory breaks etc are used to keep him going. We do not use ABA techniques but all staff are very much trained in Autism and have gone to many conferences on it. I am also certified in Assistive technology so I utilize a lot of A.T. to adapt for his needs. I am not sure if that answered your question but bottom line. Depending on the child we will mainstream as much as possible. I work in a public school and we have a program for our children with autism which utilizes ABA techniques within the full day with the student attending the preschool program and receiving one on one specialized programs the other half of the day. I would be interested how others address this particular special need.
