Veteran journalist Maran's new book, "Dirty: A Search for Answers Inside
America's Teenage Drug Epidemic," takes an up-close look at the disturbing and
seemingly intractable problem of teen substance abuse. Prompted by her own 
son's
battle with drugs in the mid-1990s, Maran follows three adolescents as they
struggle with both drug and life issues, exploring their emotional and social
needs and their search for resolutions. All three had difficulty with school,
Maran says, but she argues that they "were failed by schools more than they 
were
failing."

discussing
