The sudden decline this week of Purple Finches at Hilton Pond Center
for Piedmont Natural History was probably due to warm weather and
longer days, but we can't help but wonder if the arrival of a hungry
Sharp-shinned Hawk didn't play a role.
Our essay this week is about the sharpie that showed up and went
after some finches and include some close-up photos of the predator
at work. To view our current installment, please visit "This Week at
Hilton Pond" for 1-7 March 2004 at
<<http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek040301.html>>
As always, there's a tally of all birds banded during the week, plus a
couple of recaptures; we also include links to the accounts of three
Rufous Hummingbirds banded on 2-3 March.
Please forward this message to friends who appreciate birds and
nature, and tell them they can get a free reminder for "This Week
