      See the Gates in Action
In this video, see how a wall of hinged barriers at each of the
three entrances to the lagoon would rise to collectively hold
back the sea during extreme high tides. Statistics about gate
dimensions, weight, project costs, and more are provided in a
      text sidebar. (QuickTime or RealPlayer plug-in required;
      illustrated transcript narration available.)
      (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

      Weighing the Solutions
Read about why Venice is facing increasing flooding, the effect
of the high tides on the city, and the plans to cope with the
problems in this article by John Keahey, author of "Venice
Against the Sea." (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

      Venice Under Siege
Click on highlighted areas of three satellite photographs to
learn about the various hazards facing the city, lagoon, and
region of Venice. (Flash plug-in required; non-Flash version
      available.)

      What Causes the Tides?
Step through an animated explanation of tides in this online
activity. Information on tidal curiosities, such as why the
biggest tides happen when the moon is full, is provided in
a text sidebar. (Flash plug-in required; non-Flash version
      available.) (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

      Teacher's Guide
In this classroom activity, students track problems and proposed
solutions to Venice's floodwater problems in order to better
understand the complexity of resolving the city's increasing
      flood troubles. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)
