THEME OF THE WEEK: IRISH HISTORY
************************************************************
** ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK **
A Force of Change
Throughout history, natural disasters have been a force of change in many
civilizations. Students can be divided into pairs or small groups to research
some of these disasters: 1. the Potato Famine in Ireland, including the cause
and effect of such a disaster on a country and its people. 2. the Black Death,
including the cause and effect of the bubonic plague across Europe. The
negative effects should be obvious, but is it possible that there were any
positive outcomes from such natural disasters?
A concluding activity could involve a discussion of today's world, with
predictions of current diseases and environmental conditions that might lead to
disastrous situations. (e.g. AIDS, SARS, Mad Cow disease, global warming).
