THEME OF THE WEEK: FORCES & GRAVITY
************************************************************
** ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK **
Roller Coasters & Physics: Making the Connection
Often the key to student interest in any science topic is to make a real-world
connection. Ask your students to list their favorite amusement parks and roller
coasters. With little or no difficulty they will be able to brainstorm many
locations.
From this listing you can take the classroom discussion into the world of
"roller coaster physics." The g forces experienced by roller coaster riders are
the result of unbalanced forces. The seats of the roller coaster cars create
these forces as they push against the riders to change their direction at the
bottoms of hills and around curves and loops. Loops and corkscrews are vital
because they act as safety factors. Their purpose is to slow the rider down
enough to help keep the g forces of the ride from becoming too extreme.
