'Voluntary' Aeroshell oil recall affects quarter million gallons; AOPA urges
compliance

Dec. 3 — AOPA learned late this afternoon that the Aeroshell aviation oil
recall announced over the weekend affects about 264,000 gallons of Aeroshell
oils in quart and gallon bottles, equivalent to some 90,000 cases. About 2.2
million gallons are sold each year.

Aeroshell producer Equilon initiated the recall after finding a blend plant
mechanical problem that allowed 5-60 micron magnetic particles to contaminate
bottles of Aeroshell 80, 100, W65, W80, W100, W100 Plus and W 15W50 oils
manufactured between September 7 and November 13.

Equilon spokesman Rick Wirth told AOPA this afternoon that the debris in
affected products could increase engine wear over time, but that catastrophic
engine failure should not be expected. Nonetheless, AOPA is urging members to
comply with the voluntary recall, returning recalled bottles or cases
directly to the distributor.

"Oil is obviously a critical item for safe engine operation, so we're
encouraging users of these batches of Aeroshell oil to treat this recall as
an urgent 'safety of flight' issue," said Lance Nuckolls, AOPA director of
regulatory and certification policy.

Wirth also told AOPA that some 50,000 of the 90,000 cases affected are still
in Equilon warehouses, and that no Aeroshell drum containers were affected.

Equilon had previously assured AOPA it would replace all recalled Aeroshell
products at no cost. Specific bottle and case numbers of affected products a

AOPA asks that members experiencing problems related to the recall notify
AOPA at 800/USA-AOPA (800/872-2672).
