He began his airport manager career at Rocky Mount-Wilson
Regional Airport in 1997. He ran two airports in Tuolumne County, Calif.,
from 2001 to 2003; and the Hickory, N.C., airport from 2003 to 2006.
What are some of the challenges facing municipal airports in the Northern
Virginia/metropolitan D.C. area and/or Leesburg Executive Airport in
particular?
One such challenge is the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). We are
just inside of it by about a mile and a half.
This greatly restricts the enjoyment pilots expect to have when owning an
airplane. Much more emphasis must be placed on flight planning. You are
watched
from the time you take off until you land, if both occur under the ADIZ.
Special codes are given to track aircraft. Leesburg Executive Airport has seen
a
decline in the amount of traffic since the ADIZ has been put in place.
How many flights go through Leesburg Executive Airport annually?
Our annual estimated traffic is around 120,000 operations each year. An
operation comprises one takeoff and one landing. A touch-and-go counts as one
operation.
Are there any notable trends in the corporate jet industry?
Yes there are. One such trend is that we are seeing a great deal of activity
with what is called "fractional ownership."
Many companies have sprung up buying aircraft and selling "shares" in that
aircraft. Say you're very busy or just travel a great deal. You don't want to
waste time in line at the international airport so you might call up a
company and ask how to join. You would pay a fee to initiate the process and a
monthly fee. You then would call the company when you want to travel and they
come to your local airport and pick you up. They also bring you back. They
would
have a window in which you would have to be at the airport waiting for them
and a certain time you must call in advance for the ride.
We are seeing more of this activity at Leesburg from various companies using
both propeller driven aircraft and jets.
What first got you interested in aviation?
Building model airplanes and model rockets.
What's your favorite aviation-focused movie?
Anything black and white with old "war birds" in it, such as "12 O'Clock
High."
What's your favorite food?
Seafood -- I am an advanced SCUBA diver. I spent most of my time on the
beach in San Diego.
