At Least One Dies In Crash Posted 2006-02-24 Plane Hits Power
Lines East Of I-81
By Rob Longley
An airplane struck several power lines and crashed late Thursday night just
east of Interstate 81, south of the Weyers Cave exit, according to witnesses
and emergency workers.
The aircraft, which appeared to be a single-engine plane, came to rest just
feet from the northbound lane of I-81.
At least one person was killed, rescue workers reported early this morning.
The identity of the person was not known as of press time early this morning.
The plane was badly charred, according to witnesses, but itâs not clear if
the aircraft caught fire while in flight or after the crash.
Itâs also not clear if the plane had taken off from or was trying to land at
Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, which is in Weyers Cave, about three
miles from the interstate, or if the plane was passing through the area.
According to witnesses, the pilot appeared to circle a nearby rest area
several times before the crash occurred, but itâs not known whether the
pilot was
looking for an emergency landing site.
Additional details, including the specific model of the aircraft, how many
people were on board and whether a distress signal had been sent before the
crash, were not known at press time.
The Daily News-Record will provide complete coverage of the crash today on
its Web site, www.dnronline.com, and in Saturdayâs newspaper.
