[JYO] The "Color" GPS version of the Portable 196 is the Garmin GPSMAP296.

Dear Leesburg Pilots -
Many of you have taken advantage of the group discount I was able to provide
you on the Garmin 196 handheld GPS. With all the "airspace" around here and
the rest of the local area, I always thouht it was safer for a pilot to use
a GPS in addition to "prudent" navigation whether you are an owner, a renter,
student or enthusiast.
Now I want to see if there is any interest from you folks to get a deal on
the Color 296. It looks like it will be "announced" by Garmin at Sun-N-Fun.
Retail price is $1895. Show price is going to be around $1650. If we get
enought people interested here at LeesburgPilots.com, I expect the price you
will
have to pay is around $1600.00. Delivery is going to be up to Garmin but
they expect to start shipping at the end of April. Ordering will be like last
time with the 196.. Pre-payment by check and then sit and wait on Garmin to
ship. I need to get a headcount to see how many are interested. If I get
enough folks, I will proceed. If you want to be included, send me an e-mail
stating so.

"You've never seen so much map-based nav detail in a portable GPS before.
With its bright 256-color LCD screen and self-contained topographic data base,
the new GPSMAP 296 takes terrain awareness to a whole new level. Detailed
Sectional chart-style shaded mapping and an extensive Jeppesen data base help
you visualize your flight path in relation to nearby navaids, terrain, SUAs,
obstructions, etc. Plus you can put the unit in "Terrain" mode for TAWS-like
warnings and alerts when proximity conflicts loom added. For added versatility,

optional MapSource CD downloads and user-selectable formats let you transfer
this portable GPS form panel to helm to dashboard with skipping a beat."

Select the "Panel" page and you're flying with an EFIS-like color display of
GPS-derived HSI, airspeed indicator, altimeter, VSI and turn indicator.
It's like a glass cockpit that can fit in your pocket

possible obstructions or ground proximity conflicts ahead.
