Progress continues toward restoring VFR in Class B

10/12/01 11:30:29 AM, ET — FAA and Department of Transportation officials met
with the National Security Council this morning to discuss a plan that would
restore VFR operations in enhanced Class B (ECB) airspace. While this may
lead to an announcement as early as today about the future of ECB, pilots
should not count on the airspace actually reopening this weekend.

"As we approach another lost weekend without VFR flying in Class B, we
understand our members' frustration," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "AOPA
continues every effort to restore our flying privileges. And AOPA will
continue to keep members informed with solid information that they can act
on."

Senior FAA and congressional officials have confirmed that the proposed plan
would incorporate AOPA suggestions to phase in the reopening of ECB airspace
to VFR operations. Some 15 Class B areas viewed as less critical to national
security would be reopened first, with others to follow later. AOPA
understands that certain airport security issues still need to be resolved to
the satisfaction of the National Security Council. FAA security officials are
still working out these details. (<A
