[JYO] Potomac Airpark

This e-Alert is provided as a member service to EAA members in DE, PA, and
VA to keep you informed of the latest Airpark changes in your area.
Today, November 2, EAA learned Tuesday that the Transportation Security
Administration has closed Potomac Airfield (VKX) in Maryland because of
unresolved issues regarding maintenance and oversight of its security plan.
Potomac
Airfield is one of the "DC-3" airports near Washington, D.C., which has had
operations and traffic severely restricted since the 9/11 attacks.
On November 2, TSA issued its plan via an FAA NOTAM that will allow owners
the opportunity to relocate their aircraft to other facilities on Friday,
November 4, Saturday, November 5, and Sunday November 6, between the hours of
700
a.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time. These are the only windows during which
aircraft may be relocated and strict adherence to the current plight plan and
security procedures will be required.
TSA officials told EAA late Tuesday that the closing had nothing to do with
any security threats or issues related to the Washington, D.C. Air Defense
Identification Zone (ADIZ). TSA also emphasized that pilot actions at Potomac
were not responsible for the agency's action.
There were a number of airplanes that were trapped at the airfield in the
aftermath of TSA's action to close the airport and EAA urged TSA to develop a
plan for stranded aircraft to be removed at the owner's discretion.
It is unclear how long Potomac Airpark will remain closed but EAA is urging
the TSA to work closely with the airport management to assist in rectifying
any and all security plan oversight issues and reopen the airport as soon as
possible.
