Apr 18, 2005 -- A student pilot from Arlington had an errant landing at
Leesburg Executive Airport Saturday, but he walked away from the incident
uninjured. The single-engine plane from Av-Ed Flight School landed in a wooded
area
west of the airport.
Leesburg police, fire and rescue and Virginia State Police responded to the
airport at 4:19 p.m. Virginia State Police and the National Transportation
Safety Board will be investigating the incident.
Todd Gunther, investigator in charge from the National Transportation Safety
Board, said the student pilot encountered some difficulty just prior to
landing and the aircraft drifted west and hit some trees approximately 360
feet
away from the runway.
The Diamond Industries DA40 plane sustained extensive damage, he said. He
said the safety board will have a factual report completed in 30 days.
Airport Commission Chairman Steve Axeman said the planeâs landing gear was
damaged and that the engine will need to be torn apart, which is common when a
plane comes to a halting stop. Axeman also said that often times, flight
schools use planes that are leased to them from private owners. Both receive
income from the exchange, but Axeman said the insurance costs can triple to
about $10,000. Av-Ed representatives declined to comment.
