Nuclear TFR notam expires but security officials meeting today to discuss
future
11/7/01 9:39:01 AM ET — Late last night, the FAA notam that closed airspace
over more than 80 nuclear facilities expired, allowing operations to resume
at more than 700 general aviation landing facilities. This nuclear TFR had
resulted in general aviation pilots feeling the sudden impact of "broad
brush" closures of airspace by security officials, in response to undefined
terrorist threats. While homeland security is of vital importance, the
nuclear TFR illustrates the fact that general aviation has become an easy
target for some government authorities, as they struggle to strike a balance
between security and commerce.
AOPA is working hard to provide information to these officials so that
general aviation is not unnecessarily restricted by future security measures.
To that end, AOPA has provided operational and economic data to government
officials in advance of an airspace security meeting to take place this
afternoon. AOPA will continue to be a resource for the security decision
makers and a strong advocate for general aviation.
