March 2002 The March, 2002 meeting of the Leesburg Airport Commission has
concluded, and that means it's time for Doug's Corner!

SPACE RENTAL RATE INCREASE APPROVED - Tiedown and hangar rates will increase
effective May 1, 2002 at Leesburg Executive Airport after a vote by the
Airport Commission. Monthly rates will be $75 for grass tiedowns, $95 for
hard surface tiedowns, $195 for south T-hangars, and $375 for north
T-hangars.

PISTON SHOP HANGAR GONE - One of the airport's original hangars was recently
leveled to make way for additional ramp and tiedown space as part of the
North Apron Expansion project. As a result, the rotating beacon was relocated
atop a 50-foot monopole near the fuel farm. The rotating beacon was
refurbished, and pilot comments have been positive.

BEACON DRAWS PROTEST - Two complaints were received by airport management
after the rotating beacon was relocated. The homeowners, both about a mile
west of the airport, say the "strobe" light is very disruptive. One man said
it shines in his bedroom at night and makes it difficult to sleep. Airport
management agreed to make sure the beacon is properly aligned.

WHAT ARE THE BULLDOZERS DOING? - In response to recent inquiries, the grading
work by the runway is part of the West Side Safety Area improvements. The
ground in and around the runway is being leveled to increase safety in the
event an aircraft leaves the pavement. The project is now about 70 percent
complete.

NORTH HANGARS FINISHED - The airport now has an additional 12 T-hangars and 5
corporate T-hangars. The units are completely occupied. A few minor
punch-list items remain to be addressed in the coming week.

MORE BASED AIRCRAFT - As a result of the new hangar construction, the number
of based aircraft has increased to 260. This includes 18 turbine aircraft.

TERMINAL BUILDING CLOSER - After receiving a State grant of $495,000, work is
proceeding quickly to issue a Request for Proposal for construction
management services on the terminal building renovation and expansion
project. If plans go according to schedule, the contract will be signed in
May and construction will begin in September, 2002. Design work was completed
last year.

ADDITIONAL LIGHTING - In response to requests made at the February meeting of
the Airport Commission, a new 450-watt sodium vapor flood light was installed
on one of the South T-hangars facing the adjacent ramp. In addition, NOVEC
was contacted to service three inoperative utility lights near the South
hangars. Seven utility lights the area are currently operational.

FUEL SALES UP - February, 2002 avgas sales were up 7 percent and jet fuel was
up 46 percent over a year ago. Better that expected winter weather and an
increase in transient jet traffic factor into the improved figures.

Thanks for reading.

See you next month!
