[JYO] MITRE/CAASD CDTI Study

Pilots – We Need Your Help!
Invitation to Participate in Aviation Research,
August 26 through September 5, 2008.
The MITRE Corporation Center for Advanced Aviation System Development
(CAASD) is soliciting the help of eight pilots in a study of Cockpit Display
of
Traffic Information (CDTI). This particular study will focus on several
aspects
of pilot use of CDTI while performing standard instrument approach and
departure procedures. The operational CDTI concepts being tested are in an
early
stage of development and flight crew input is required to help identify
display usability and operations concept issues that may need to be resolved
in
order to successfully implement use of CDTI in Instrument Meteorological
Conditions (IMC). As the ultimate end users of this technology, it is
important to
have pilot participation and input early in the concept development process
to help identify issues and develop solutions. The data collected during
this study, as in all our research, is aggregated and de-identified prior to
analysis and reporting. Individual pilots are not identified
The study is expected to require a full day of participation (8:00 am to
4:30pm) and will include introductory briefings, warm up flying in the CAASD
generic flight deck simulator, and three blocks of data collection trials.
Pilot
opinion data will be collected after each trial and again at the completion
of the study. A $250.00 stipend will be paid, and lunch will be provided.
Transportation and lodging costs will be borne by the pilot.
Participants must have previous experience as a pilot in FAR Part 121 or
Part 135 operations.. Both Captains and First Officers are eligible and we
would
prefer a mix of pilot in command and second in command opinion. Regardless
of your current crew status, all trials will be flown from the left seat as
pilot in command and pilot flying. A confederate CAASD pilot will provide
support as co-pilot. Recently furloughed pilots who have flown within the
past 12
months are eligible. A current medical certificate is not required, but
participants must have flown as a crewmember in air carrier or on demand
charter
operations within the last 12 months. Pilots with military flying
experience using Station Keeping Equipment (SKE) are NOT eligible. Preference
will be
given to pilots who have not flown in a CAASD study within the previous 12
months.
If you would be interested in participating in this research please contact
Charmaigne Burris at 703-983-1606 or cburris@xxxxxxxxxx Pilots will be
scheduled Tuesday through Friday of each week, beginning August 26 and ending
September 5. If you have availability on more than one day, please indicate
your
order of preference.
Thank you for your interest and support in the advancement of aviation!
Thanks,
Charmaigne Burriss
