Dear 21cTECH Customers-

There is a hot new email-borne virus, MyDoom/Novarg, making the rounds of
the Internet.  Please be careful!

If you get the MyDoom/Novarg virus, your system will start sending out mass
emails, and certain system files on your PC may be over written, which could
stop your PC from working. This is a bad thing.

Here are some steps you should take to protect yourself from this virus:
1. Please make sure that your Virus Definitions are up to date, your
antivirus program running, and that you do not open any email attachments
from strangers.
2.  Sometimes, an infected email will arrive looking like an official system
"email was not deliverable message".   Do not open the attachments on these
emails unless you are sure you originated a message to that domain.
4.  Also, do not open any jpg.exe or txt.scr attachments from people you
know but were not expecting to receive file attachments from.

For more detail, please see the articles below.

Regards,

-Jeffrey Jaye

>From PC Magazine:

A powerful worm virus known variously as W32/Novarg.A, W32/Shimg,
W32/Mydoom, or W32/Mimail.R is devastating personal and corporate e-mail
systems across the globe. This fast-moving mass mailer internet worm
apparently started spreading on the popular peer-to-peer file-sharing
application, Kazaa, and has now moved to e-mail. The virus will overwrite
certain system files, e-mail itself to every e-mail address it finds on a
victim's machine, and opens a back door to malicious attack. It affects
Windows 9x/Me/2000/2003/XP systems. As of Tuesday morning, it was the top
virus/worm in North America, and most Antivirus companies had escalated the
threat to a high or dangerous level.

>From Symantec:

W32.Novarg.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with
the file extension .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.

When a computer is infected, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system
by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, which can potentially allow an
attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to
its network resources.

In addition, the backdoor can download and execute arbitrary files.

The worm will perform a Denial of Service (DoS) starting on February 1,
2004. It also has a trigger date to stop spreading on February 12, 2004.
These two events will only occur if the worm is run between or after those
dates. While the worm will stop spreading on February 12, 2004, the backdoor
component will continue to function after this date.
