Leesburg Airport will close for repairs

Leesburg Executive Airport will be closed to all traffic for two to four
weeks and closed to large aircraft for an additional 60 days next summer while
its runway is repaved.

The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to award a construction
contract to Chemung Contracting Corp. for a $3.5 million project to replace
the
runway's old pavement. The town will pay about 1 percent of the project's
costs while the Federal Aviation Administration pays 95 percent and the
Virginia
Department of Aviation pays 4 percent.

According to Capital Projects Director Nagi Elsewaissi, the repaving
of the northern and southern halves of the runway will take about 60 days.
During this 60-day period, spanning June and July 2005, small aircraft will be
able to use the airport, but large aircraft that require longer runways will
not.

Starting around the first week in August, the runway will be closed to all
air traffic for two to three weeks, Elsewaissi said, while the marriage of the
two paving projects occurs. Airport Director Cindi Martin said this phase
may take as long as four weeks if bad weather slows it down.

The airport will be open to all traffic in late August and September, while
the pavement is allowed to cure, Elsewaissi said. Then it will be closed
again to all aircraft for two to three days in late September or early October
while crews groove the pavement's surface for better traction.

Council member Bob Zoldos said he was concerned about the lengthy closing of
the airport and asked whether crews could speed up the process with longer
shifts. Elsewaissi said the project could not proceed any faster than planned
because the pavement needs time to set properly.

In addition to repaving, the project will upgrade the runway's lighting
system and add a new taxiway connector.
