Here is the June, 2002 Edition of Doug's Corner. Let's start off with news
about airport construction projects.
WEST SIDE SAFETY AREA - This grading project to improve safety around the
runway is essentially complete. Punch list items are now being addressed.
NORTH APRON EXPANSION - The first phase of this paving project adjacent to
the terminal building is now complete. Demolition of the second phase is
underway. The third phase may be delayed until Adelphia Cable relocates their
aerial utility lines.
TERMINAL BUILDING PARKING LOT - On June 11, 2002 the Leesburg Town Council
approved the contracts for this project and construction should begin in the
next seven to ten days. The project will be done in phases and vehicular
traffic patterns will be changed near the terminal building. Airport users
are asked to be patient until the dust settles in three months.
TERMINAL BUILDING - This project has been re-advertised. Bid opening is
scheduled for June 17, 2002 and ground breaking is scheduled for October,
2002. The project will take 12 months to complete.
RUNWAY PAINTING - Runway 17-35 markings have been painted. The work was
accomplished at night to cause minimal disruption to airport users.
HANGAR PUNCH LIST - Discrepancies in the newly constructed hangars are being
addressed by the general contractor. Two specific items are door rigging and
the operation of door motors. Erect-A-Tube, the manufacturer of the doors,
has been very cooperative and has sent technicians from the factory in
Illinois to solve these warranty issues.
ROTATING BEACON - The rotating beacon was inoperative for several nights
recently due to internal mechanical failure. The manufacturer of the light
sent a technician to solve what were essentially factory problems, and the
beacon is operational once again. The beacon has also been adjusted to
activate sooner at twilight.
NEW EQUIPMENT - The airport maintenance department took delivery of a new
cutting deck and arm mower for the Trackless Vehicle. This equipment will
allow us to cut grass more efficiently around runway lights and on steep
grades.
PROMOTIONAL GRANT - The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted on June 3,
2002 to approve the allocation of $70,000 in federal grant money for
promotion of Leesburg Executive Airport. This is the first such investment in
the airport ever made by the County.
STRATFORD DEVELOPMENT - Commercial development within a mile of the approach
end of Runway 17 was the subject of a meeting on June 13, 2002 with
representatives from the FAA Airports District Office, the developer, the
Town and the County. Airport management and the FAA made it clear that the
Runway Protection Zone and other airspace will be preserved and that no
denigration of instrument approach minimums will be tolerated. The developer
agreed to these conditions at the meeting and we will be closely monitoring
the situation.
AIRPORT PR - On June 5, 2002 the Airport Director addressed the first annual
Leesburg Business Forum. The event was well-attended with over 100 business
leaders from around the region. It provided a wonderful opportunity to
promote the airport and underscore the facility's $23 million annual economic
contribution to the local economy.
Thanks for reading. See you next month!
Doug McNeeley, CM
Airport Director
