The July meeting of the
Leesburg Airport Commission was held last night. It
marked the first meeting of the commission in the newly opened Stanley
F.
Caulkins Terminal Building.
Prior to the meeting, Airport Director Cindi Martin gave a presentation
to
the commision and several newly elected Town Council members called
'Airport
101'. It was a detailed description of the operations and workings of
the
airport, and the issues facing the airport over the next 10 years. Ms.
Martin received kudos from all attendees for the professional nature of
the
presentation, and the volume of information delivered.
The Commission welcomed two new members, Charles Hale and Tom
Soderholm, and
also welcomed returning member Bill Whyte on a new appointment. Mr.
Stephen
Axeman was re-elected to Chair the Commision, and Dennis Boykin was
elected
Vice-Chair. The Commission further welcomed Leesburg's Vice Mayor, Mr.
Marty Martinez as the new Councilmanic representative.
Jerry Szelc presented the activities of the Open House Committee. He
made
an excellent case for additional support by interested pilots and local
businesses. The next meeting of the committee is Wednesday the 21st at
7 PM
at Piedmont Hawthorne, Leesburg. Further participation is critical to
make
this event a success.
The Commission closed out one old piece of business by recommending
approval
of the lease application for American Helicopters. This new flight
school
will initially locate one Robinson aircraft and one instructor in
Leesburg
and occupy space next door to Aviation Adventures on the first floor of
the
new terminal building.
The Commission took on two new pieces of business:
- Mr. Axeman is taking the lead on drafting language for a
resolution
for the Town to begin the process of protecting the airport from
additional
development encroachment. It is the sense of the Commission that it
needs
to be involved in a multi-jurisdictional discussion of land use,
especially
for property to the west and south of the airport.
- Mr. Boykin has the lead on drafting language for the Town to
formally
oppose a permanent ADIZ over Leesburg. It is the sense of the
Commission
that the ADIZ is a signficant operational and economic burden on the
Town,
it's Airport, and the airport's tenants. Mr. Martinez will assist in
coordinating Town Council support for a formal response to the upcoming
NPRM. Mr. Keith Holt of AOPA's Legislative Liaison Office attended the
meeting, and answered several questions of attendees and commissioners
regarding the ongoing ADIZ discussions.
