FSS upgraded phone system, pilot service anticipated to improve

Nov. 20 — Thanks to a recent upgrade in phone system used by flight service
stations (AFSS), <A
HREF="http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/air_traffic/afss_tollfree.html";>individual
toll-free numbers</A> are now available for each
facility. AOPA has long supported this effort so that pilots can use cell
phones far from home to contact the nearest flight service station. Some cell
phone users find that when they call the national briefing number
(1-800-WX-BRIEF or 1- 800-992-7433), their call is routed to the AFSS nearest
to their home (where the cell phone is registered), rather than to a flight
service station near their actual location at the time of the call. With
these new toll-free numbers, pilots will also be able to easily call for
local notams at destinations outside of their home station's briefing area.
So-called l-notams are not distributed nationaly. Of course, the 800-WX-BRIEF
number is still available for all AFSS inquiries. The FAA wants pilots to use
the WX-BRIEF number whenever possible to provide for the normal distribution
of calls during peak hours and reduced wait times.
