[JYO] July 6th Diamond DA-20 Katana Crash Near Leesburg...

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and loved ones of
Pilot Jim Scambos that died in the crash of a Diamond DA-20 Katana on
Saturday, July 6th, 2002 near Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, VA.

Sources tell me it looked as though Jim was maneuvering the aircraft as to
not cause any personal injury or property damage to anyone on the ground.
The Fire & Rescue Services, Police, NTSB, FAA, Diamond, Continental Engines,
Leesburg Airport Director & others all responded to the scene and worked
together in such a terrible incident.

Jul 06, 2002 -- An Ashburn man was killed this morning when the plane he was
piloting crashed in a driveway of a Leesburg house just yards away from Ida
Lee Park where he was attempting to land his disabled plane. Police and
witnesses are crediting the skills of James M. Scambos, 44, of Ashburn, with
saving lives as he was able to guide his leased Diamond DA-20 away from
downtown Leesburg toward an emergency landing at Ida Lee Park. But the plane
nose-dived into a subdivision, crashing at the end of Tudor Court. No
residents were injured and no homes were damaged.

Scambos was pronounced dead at the scene. His son Paul, 22, was a passenger
in the lightweight two-seat aircraft and suffered minor injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. Scambos,
a United Airlines pilot, reported engine trouble about 45 minutes into the
flight that left Leesburg Airport at 9:30. The aircraft was delivered to
Av-Ed Flight School at Leesburg Airport in January and had just passed a
routine inspection, investigators reported.
