Invitation to Participate in Research on Runway Safety

The MITRE Corporation Center for Advanced Aviation System Development
(CAASD)
McLean, Virginia
MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is
soliciting help of pilots for a runway safety simulation study in the second
half of
July 2006 (July 17 to 28). This simulation is performed in cooperation with
the FAA and evaluates new airport surface safety systems. During this
simulation, pilots will operate a mid-fidelity flight simulator for a transport
 type
aircraft. Participants will perform arrival, departure, and taxi operations.
There are no known risks or physical discomforts associated with this
simulation beyond those of ordinary life, and you will be paid $150
compensation for
your participation. During the simulation, eye-gaze information will be
recorded via a head-mounted camera, information about equipment can be found
at
_http://a-s-l.com/brochures/H6-brochure.pdf_
(http://a-s-l.com/brochures/H6-brochure.pdf) . Audio, video, and aircraft
operations data will be collected
during each scenario for later analysis. Your identity will be kept anonymous
and not be connected with the data. The simulation duration is about 4 hours.
Requirements: Commercial pilot certification and experience flying into or
out of large, towered airports within or outside the US (e.g. OEP 35
airports).
If you fulfill these requirements, please contact Shannon Bruther at
703-983-3639 (_sbruther@xxxxxxxxxx (mailto:sbruther@xxxxxxxxx) ) for further
details
and schedule your participation. During the scheduling process, you will be
asked to provide following information: age, gender, number of flight hours
during last 6 months, type of most frequently flown aircraft. We will use this
information to pair you with another pilot with similar characteristics.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Thank you,
Shannon Bruther
