Invitation to Participate in Research on Runway Safety

The MITRE Corporation Center for Advanced Aviation System Development
(CAASD)

McLean, Virginia

The Center for Advanced Aviation System Development at the MITRE
Corporation would like to invite you to participate in part of an FAA
Runway Safety initiative. We are conducting a series of cockpit
simulations to assess technologies to improve runway safety. During
this simulation, you will be asked to operate an aircraft on a
simulated airport runway. The outcome of this study will be used by the
FAA to improve current airport surface safety technologies.
Participants should have a commercial pilot certificate, but a current
medical certificate is not required. Pilots should have recent flight
experience within the past three months.

The simulation environment consists of a mid-fidelity, generic cockpit
with a visual scene. Prior to the start of the simulation, you will be
given time to familiarize yourself with the simulator aircraft. In
previous studies, even inexperienced pilots have found it easy to
operate the simulator after some initial practice trials. During the
simulation, you will be asked to complete taxi, arrival and departure
operations and be asked to complete questionnaires at the end of the
scenarios. There are no known risks or physical discomforts associated
with this study beyond those of ordinary life.

The simulations will entail a single 4 hour session per participant,
and will be conducted from February 27th through March 10th. Two pilots
will be scheduled per day (8:00AM -12:00 PM & 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM) during
the evaluation period. MITRE will provide $150 compensation for your
participation.

For more information, or if you would like to participate please
forward your qualifications and any additional type ratings to:
