FAA TO ESTABLISH LARGE TFR OVER QUANTICO
AOPA is sending this message to advise you that President Bush is
scheduled to visit Quantico, Virginia, tomorrow (Wednesday, September
10). His visit will be accompanied by a 20-nautical-mile-radius
temporary flight restriction (TFR) that will encompass one smaller,
10-nm-radius area in which general aviation flight will be prohibited.

The TFR will temporarily close some airports and restrict your flying.
"While we are pleased to see the diameter of the overall flight
restricted area reduced from the 'standard' 60 to 40 nautical miles [in
diameter], the president will be inside an already restricted piece of
airspace. To pile restrictions on top of restrictions seems to go too
far," said AOPA President Phil Boyer.

The large 20-nm-radius TFR, centered on the BRV VOR's 348-degree radial
at 12.5 miles, extends up to Flight Level 180 and will be in effect
from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Aircraft entering or
exiting the 20-nm TFR are required to be on active VFR or IFR flight
plans and maintain two-way radio communication with air traffic control.
The notam does say that ATC may authorize transit operations. See AOPA
Online for the full text of the notam

The impacted landing facilities are Stafford Regional (RMN), Whitman
Strip (0V5), Hartwood (8W8), Manassas Regional/Harry P. Davis Field
(HEF), Warrenton-Fauquier (W66), Shannon (EZF), Maryland (2W5), and
Culpeper Regional (CJR).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
Violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

The AOPA Air Safety Foundation has prepared a handy card that provides
the intercept procedures that could save your life, since military
pilots have shoot-down authority. Download the card from AOPA Online
( http://download.aopa.org/epilot/2003/intercept.pdf ), learn the
information carried on it, and carry it with you when you fly. ASF
also has an online course for navigating in today's complex airspace
environment called "Know Before You Go"
