[JYO] FAA has grounded all IFR and VFR traffic

Tuesday, September 11, 2001 12:03:35 PM – The FAA has grounded all air 
traffic in the U.S. following apparent terrorist attacks on the World Trade 
Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. Two hijacked 
American Airlines flights (AA11 from Boston to Los Angeles, a Boeing 767, and 
AA77, a Boeing 757 from Washington-Dulles to Los Angeles) crashed into the 
World Trade Center towers this morning beginning shortly before 9 a.m. 
Eastern time. American says 156 people were aboard the two flights. Both 
towers collapsed. Two United flights have been reported hijacked as well 
(UA93 and UA175). An aircraft has impacted the Pentagon building. What is 
being described as a “large aircraft” has also crashed outside of Somerset, 
Pennsylvania, in the west-central part of the state. FAA issued the following 
notam: !FDC 1/9731 FDC SPECIAL NOTICE - DUE TO EXTRADORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES 
AND FOR REASONS OF SAFETY. ATTENTION ALL AIRCRAFT OPERATORS, BY ORDER OF THE 
FEDERAL AVATION COMMAND CENTER, ALL AIRPORTS/ AIRDROMES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED 
FOR LANDING AND TAKEOFF. ALL TRAFFIC INCLUDING AIRBORNE AIRCRAFT ARE 
ENCOURAGE TO LAND SHORTLY. FAA has grounded all IFR and VFR traffic. Only 
military aircraft are allowed to fly.
