FAA TO ESTABLISH TFRs OVER BALTIMORE, CAMP DAVID
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in the Mid-Atlantic area
that the FAA has issued notams restricting flight for President Bush's
visit to Baltimore on Friday and his stay at Camp David, Maryland,
this weekend.
There will be two 10-nautical-mile-radius temporary flight restrictions
(TFRs) over Baltimore on Friday, December 5. The first TFR will be
centered on the BAL VOR's 360-degree radial at 6.8 miles and will be
in effect from 10:50 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. local and again from 1:45 p.m.
to 2:50 p.m. local. The second TFR will be centered on the BAL VOR's
300-degree radial at 4.5 miles and will be in effect from 12:40 p.m. to
2:30 p.m. local. The affected airports are Baltimore-Washington
International (BWI), Essex Skypark (W48), Martin State (MTN), and
Tipton (FME). See AOPA Online for the full text of the notam
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#3/1480 ).
Also, Prohibited Area P-40, the presidential retreat at Camp David,
Maryland, will grow larger. The TFR will extend to a 10-nm radius below
18,000 feet beginning at 9 a.m. local on Saturday, December 6, and
continuing through 1 p.m. local on Sunday, December 7. See the notam
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#3/1481 ).
Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.
To help you navigate through today's complex airspace, AOPA has
launched the new AOPA Real-Time Flight Planner that provides
up-to-the-minute graphical depictions of TFRs
( http://www.aopa.org/flight_planner/intro.html ). The FAA also has
launched a new graphical TFR Web site ( http://tfr.faa.gov ).
The AOPA Air Safety Foundation has prepared a handy card depicting
the intercept procedures that could save your life, since military
pilots have shoot-down authority. Download the card from AOPA Online
( http://download.aopa.org/epilot/2003/intercept.pdf ), learn the
information carried on it, and carry it with you when you fly. ASF
also has an online airspace course called "Know Before You Go"
