[JYO] Ed's notes from the 12/13/01 Leesburg Airport Commission Meeting

Ed's notes from the Leesburg Airport Commission Meeting last night (Thursday,
December 13, 2001)

----

- I will make the 2nd annual "Cookies to Controllers" delivery to the Dulles
Tower from Leesburg and DCPilots that donated this year (thank you). 125
cookies will be delivered the morning of December 18th. Because of security,
no tower tours this year but the delivery team can consist of 5 people
including me. If you are free for an hour on December 18th at about 10:30AM
and want to be part of the 5, let me know (first come, first served)

- The Leesburg Christmas Parade was a great success and showed the Town of
Leesburg that the airport is a big part of the town.

- Piedmont Hawthorne reported that Low-lead fuel sales are down approximately
20% because of the VFR restrictions

- Av-Ed reported pretty steady student training business but VFR private
pilot renters are no longer around.

- A few folks have temporarily put their planes at Winchester (including some
school planes) to get out from under the Class B airspace.

- Waiting lists: 113 waiting for hangars, 75 waiting for tie-downs.

- A plane that exploded on the ramp and melted the ramp last month was
removed and the asphalt will be repaired. Right now it was just covered with
sealant but will be repaired correctly when weather permits. News is the
pilot is doing fine now after suffering some burns. Cause of the fire is
under investigation.

- AOPA has selected a new Airport Support Network Manager named Mark
Lowdermilk. Mark runs the Airport Support Network that I am the Leesburg
representative for. Mark came to the meeting to meet the "locals" since he
will be moving near AOPA's HQ of Frederick, MD from WV. AOPA showed their
support for Leesburg by having Mark come to our meeting. AOPA is continuing
efforts to open up the JYO airspace for VFR pilots.

- As earlier reported via my e-mail list, there is an annexation issue and
hearing that pilots should be aware of. Pilots are urged to attend the
hearing. For more info, read the archived e-mail messages or check the
message boards at www.LeesburgPilots.com

- North Area Hangars are expected to be completed around the first of the
year.

- West side safety area, runway safety areas and parking lot construction
have all progressed but will slow to a crawl during the winter

- Doug McNeeley asked if the commission would like the beginnings of a
feasibility study for Leesburg to request an FAA control tower (in light of
the fact that the two towered airports in the Washington ECB which are
Manassas and Martin State) are both allowed VFR traffic now. All commission
members present gave the go ahead to proceed with the information gathering
process.

- There is still a problem with receiving a Snow Removal Tractor that was
purchased. We purchased a 1998 model and they sent a 1996 model. Terry says
he is working with the Tractor manufacturing company for resolution.
