[JYO] Dulles Day Family Festival and PLANE PULL is Next Month! Sat. 9/21/02 11AM-4PM

Years ago an airport cop named Joe Hurtuk (Joe is now based at Leesburg) was
watching a passenger jet get pulled by a tug into engine start position. He
thought to himself, "...I wonder how many people it would take to PULL a big
plane like that if we had a big rope?".

Joe thought that this would be a great idea to raise money for a charity. He
presented this idea to the upper echelon of the Police Department, airport
operations and other groups and was told this could not be done.

Joe moved from that New York/New Jersey airport area and came to DC as the
Deputy Chief of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. As Deputy
Chief, Joe basically said.. "Here is what we are gonna do..." With that,
the first Plane Pull was held at the Washington Dulles International Airport
in 1992 and over $10,000.00 was raised with 5 pulling teams. Now we get close
to 70/80 teams and raise about $100,000.00 for Special Olympics Virginia.

The Plane Pull is a timed event in which teams of 25 (20 pullers and 5
cheerleaders/alternate pullers) have to pull a FedEx 727 Cargo jet 12 feet.

Now there are <A HREF="http://www.planepull.com";>PLANE PULL</A> events all over
the world rasing money for
charities. We are lucky to have the ORIGINAL here at Dulles and the "Father
of the Plane Pull" right here at our own airport!
