[JYO] DC Area pilots mailing list history..

Back in 2001 I created the JYO e-mail list for pilots in and around
Leesburg. (yes, it still exists). I worked for Piedmont Hawthorne as the
weekend
manager of Line Service. Pilots would always ask me about construction
updates
and fly-in events, etc.. so I started the list. Years later, Jeff Cook took
lessons at AVED and asked how does HE post to the list. I explained that it
was a one way/broadcast list. He then said that he was going to built a two
way list and web site and did so. Even did a great job of it in my opinion. I
sent my 400+ list members to Jeff's site and told them of a great new
resource.
Many signed up.. and unlike MY list they could ask questions and hold
discussions. Jeff did a good job at keeping the web page updated and spam at
minimum. Where I think Jeff failed was in his constant badgering of people if
they went off topic (even a little) and his constant threats to kick people
off
the list that did not agree with him (like his logo choice, etc). He lost
interest on day and basically said "it's my ball and I am going home". I am
glad the Yahoo list exists today... off topic or not.. you guys are friends
and
a wealth of information and knowledge.
The only thing I would have done differently would have been to create a
message board style (not unlike _www.cascadesva.us_ (http://www.cascadesva.us)
)
where you could have a fly-in section, cfi section, avionics, flight schools,
tax info, mainenance, get togethers, aviation political (a BIG no no and
hand slapper on Jeff's list).
I used to really keep up the Leesburgpilots.com web site too... but even
that is just a mailing list now... still with hundreds on it but the Airport
Director does not give me updates (like the previous one's did) and nobody
knows what is going on at the airport unless they go down there and see.
I miss the good old days..

To clarify. Dcpilots.net was never anything other than a redirect to
the yahoo group. There was discussion early on about doing something
directly but the yahoo group got setup and no replacement was ever
decided upon. It was started around 2004 when Jeff cook got just a bit
nastier than many of us preferred on the .org mailing list.
